Alain Desrosières is a member of the Institut National de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques (INSEE), and of the Centre Alexandre Koyré d'Histoire des Sciences, both in Paris. He is a statistician and a specialist in the history and sociology of statistics.He is the author of The Politics of Large Numbers. A History of Statistical Reasoning (Harvard University Press 1998), of "Comparing the incomparable : the sociology of statistics", in : J.P. Touffut (ed) : Augustin Cournot : Modelling Economics, (Edward Elgar, 2007), pp. 116-143, and of : "Words and Numbers. For a Sociology of the Statistical Argument", in : A.R. Saetnan, H.M. Lomell, S. Hammer (eds) : The Mutual Construction of Statistics and Society, (Routledge, 2011), pp. 41-63.He published in French two volumes of selected papers : Pour une sociologie historique de la quantification, et Gouverner par les nombres (Mines ParisTech, 2008).
