A social scientist, Monique Dagnaud is an emerita research director at Institut Marcel Mauss (CNRS-EHESS, France). She currently teaches sociology at INA (National Audiovisual Institute, France). She has been a lecturer at Sciences Po Paris from 1977 to 2008.

Aside from her academic career, she was also invoved in regulation authorities as well as media governance. A former member of Conseil supérieur de l'audiovisuel (a French Independent authority created to protect audiovisual communication freedom), she was also a member of the Supervisory Board of the Group Le Monde from 2005 to 2010.

Her research focuses on communication and sociology of media. She is the author of numerous articles and books, with a strong interest in regulation issues. She has written on topics such as audiovisual regulation, the cultural exception, public television, advertising, financing of the media, protection of children and adolescents, cultural diversity, concentration, culture and values related to the Internet, regulation of the Internet, regulation policies towards cinema or print media. She has also conducted surveys on the media industry (audiovisual producers) as well as politics and media. First focused focused on the French context, her research gradually included work on other European countries as well as India.

She also conducted research on the culture and practices of teenagers and post-adolescents, with several surveys and one book. Since 2008, she explores the anthropological mutation brought by the network society, observing first and foremost new generations. This work was the subject of a book published in 2011 by Sciences Po under the title Generation Y, Youth and Social Networks: from Derision to Subversion. A new edition of this book was published in January 2013.

Over 60,000 US Internet startups have been created over the last decade but only 0.14% turned into unicorns i.e. startup companies with a market capitalization over one billion dollars. Who are the serial entrepreneurs who founded them? This winners club covered 84 entities in 2015 – against 39 in 2013. They have a very distinctive profile.
The Airbnb community reflects very interesting socio-cultural aspects. Almost 73% of Americans are unaware of collaborative economy, and this consumption pattern appeals primarily to under-45s, university graduates and people with a good level of income. This form of consumption is popular among the upper stratum of society because of the Romantic image it conjures, the ecological label and the art of living together. Simultaneously, it federates the support of young people because of the economic benefits it provides. Collaborative economy is the warhorse of a sort of cultural avant-garde; but this group will grow.
L'idée du partage et de l'accueil familial vantée par le site est clairement bafouée et la réalité, plus triviale, est celle d'un business de la location conduit par des particuliers commercialisant un ou plusieurs logements. Rentabiliser au mieux le capital existant est le credo de l'économie collaborative: de plus en plus de personnes semblent y adhérer.
L'économie collaborative a le vent en poupe. Ses adeptes sont toujours plus nombreux, et le discours utopique porté par ses promoteurs est dans l'air du temps. Mais le modèle a son revers.
The sharing economy has wind in its sails. Its proponents are growing in numbers and the utopian narrative disseminated by its promoters is currently in vogue. But there is another side to the coin.
